Building a Strong Parent-School Partnership
Published on September 3, 2026
A strong parent-school relationship creates a wonderful support system for your child. When home and school communicate openly, collaborate, and work together toward common goals, children feel more secure, confident, and motivated to learn and succeed. They benefit from knowing that the important adults in their lives are connected, communicating, and working together to help them grow.
At Rundle, we believe that education is a partnership. Teachers bring their professional knowledge and experience, while parents bring an invaluable understanding of their child- their personality, strengths, interests, challenges, and individual needs. When these perspectives come together, we are better equipped to support each child as a whole person.
Here are some ways you can build a strong relationship with your child’s teachers, making the most of your family’s experience at Rundle.
Effective Communication is Key
Effective communication is at the heart of a successful parent-school relationship. At Rundle, we encourage families to maintain open, respectful, and timely communication with teachers and the school. Small conversations and early communication can often prevent concerns from becoming larger challenges.
Learning Extends Beyond the Classroom
Recognize that your child’s education doesn’t end when they leave school. Parents can extend and reinforce learning at home in simple, meaningful ways:
- Encourage Daily Reading: Set aside time each day for your child to read independently, read with you, or listen to a story. Talk about what they are reading and ask questions that encourage them to make connections and share their thinking.
- Ask About Their Day: Ask specific questions such as, “What was something interesting you learned today?” or “What made you laugh today?” These conversations help children reflect on their experiences while giving you a glimpse of their school day.
- Encourage Independence: Allow your child to take increasing responsibility for their belongings, homework, organization, and daily routines. Providing support when needed while allowing children to solve age-appropriate problems helps build confidence and resilience.
- Celebrate Effort and Growth: Encourage your child by recognizing persistence, curiosity, improvement, and willingness to try – not just learning outcomes. Help your child understand that mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning.
Address Concerns Directly and Early
Questions and concerns are a natural part of any school experience. When questions or problems arise, your child’s teacher should be the first point of contact, as they are closest to your child’s day-to-day classroom experience. Approaching the conversation with curiosity, openness, and a willingness to work together creates the best opportunity for a positive outcome.
Remember that we all share the same goal: to support your child and help them thrive. Even when perspectives differ, respectful and collaborative conversations allow us to understand one another and determine the best path forward.
Practice Respect and Trust
The teachers at Rundle are highly trained professionals who care deeply about their students and bring considerable knowledge and experience to their work.
There may be times when a teacher’s perspective or approach is different from what a parent expected. When this happens, respectful dialogue is the best place to begin. Ask questions, seek to understand the reasoning behind a decision, and work together to find solutions.
At the same time, our teachers value the unique insight parents have into their children. A strong, trusting partnership allows both perspectives to be heard and respected.
Keep Up With Classroom Responsibilities
Families that are organized and respond to school communications in a timely manner help classroom routines run smoothly and ensure that your child does not miss out on activities, opportunities, or important information.
Get Involved
Attend information sessions, parent socials, school events, performances, games, and volunteer as much as you can! Your involvement tells your child that school matters and that their experience at Rundle matters to you.
Being involved also helps parents build familiarity with Rundle, meet other families, understand our school traditions and expectations, and learn more about the many opportunities available to students.
As parents, this is your Rundle experience as well, and we want you to feel connected to and engaged with everything Rundle has to offer. There are many different ways to participate in our school community, and every contribution is valued and appreciated.
Together, We Make a Difference
Ultimately, a strong parent-school partnership is built on communication, trust, respect, involvement, and a shared commitment to your child’s well-being and growth.
When children see their parents and teachers working together, they understand that the adults around them are invested in their success. This sense of connection helps children feel supported, valued, and confident as they navigate both the joys and challenges of school.
At Rundle, we are grateful to have families as partners in the educational journey. By staying connected, communicating openly, and participating in Rundle life, we can create a community where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
