Spotlight on Rundle Academy Alumna: Sarah Dowling ’12

A Journey to Ski Patrol Success

Connecting with alumni families always brings inspiring stories that remind us of the enduring spirit of Rundle Academy. Recently, I caught up with Karen Dowling, whose daughter, Sarah, graduated from the Academy in 2012.

After attending Rundle Academy, Sarah furthered her educational background at the University of Guelph. Sarah graduated with distinction, with a Bachelor of Honours Degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics. After university, she attended the Yamnuska Mountain Skills program which allowed her to gain vital outdoor knowledge. She continued her learning journey further with courses and certifications to develop her outdoor skill set. Most recently, she has obtained her Apprentice ACMG Hiking Guide certificate. Sarah now spends most of her days on skis as a Ski Patrol Supervisor at Banff Sunshine Village Resort. Sarah is the first female to hold this supervisory position. Sarah is known among her peers for her skill, quick thinking, and infectious positivity. She is passionate about assisting skiers in need during crises.

“We always knew Sarah was destined for a role that demanded both strength and compassion,” her mother Karen shared with a smile. “Ski patrolling has been the perfect fit for her.”

Karen and Sarah both credit Rundle Academy with giving Sarah a foundation of resilience and self-confidence that helped her accomplish all her levels of education as well as the demanding nature of her outdoor work. “Rundle was a place where she learned to push her limits and find ways around obstacles,” Karen shared. “That’s exactly what Sarah does on the mountain every day.”

The Dowling Family is proud to support the Rundle community and the Building Futures campaign. They hope Sarah’s story encourages current students to follow their passions, even if they lead to unexpected places.

We’re thrilled to see our alumni out in the world, making an impact, and living lives that truly reflect the spirit of Rundle.
